K-W A Great Place To Live
The Waterloo Region in southwestern Ontario is among the fastest expanding and most economically stable regions of Canada. People thinking about relocating to this community will find virtually all the big city opportunities found in a bigger urban area like Toronto without the overly fast pace of life, extensive time spent commuting and high cost of living. For instance, while Kitchener-Waterloo real estate is thought to be one of the most coveted purchases in Canada, Waterloo Region real estate prices are still a fair bit more economical than in more populous cities such as Toronto, Mississauga or Ottawa.
Waterloo Region is strategically located in the centre of Southwestern Ontario, close to 70 miles or 100 kilometers from Toronto, 100 miles or 160 kilometers from the U.S. border at Buffalo, and 185 mi or 300 km from the U.S. border between Windsor and Detroit.
The focal point of the Region is the Grand River which runs through many of the areas towns and cities and has been extremely important in its historical development.
In the census taken in 2006, the population of Waterloo Region was just over 450,000 and it was the eleventh largest census metropolitan area in Canada. The Region includes the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge and it also includes numerous smaller towns and villages as well as a large and prosperous rural area.
Kitchener is the biggest city in the region and where the Regional Municipal government is headquartered. In the census of 2006 the Kitchener's population was 204,6682. The City of Waterloo situated adjacent to Kitchener has has just under 100,000 residents. In addition Waterloo has more than 20,000 non-resident college and university students attending classes at its universities and regional colleges. The two cities actually abut each other and together are usually referred to as Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.
Cambridge, the other major city in the area is found in the southern part of Waterloo Region and has a population of just over 120,000. Cambridge was formed in 1973 with the merging of the cities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local residents resisted this amalgamation, considering it a "shotgun marriage" forced on them by the Province of Ontario.
Today Waterloo Region is one of the most dynamic and fastest growing regions of Canada with some of the best agricultural land in Canada, two well respected Universities, a strong financial sector, numerous manufacturing plants and a burgeoning high tech sector anchored in enterprises like Research in Motion and other spinoff companies from the region's two univeristies.
Families thinking about moving into the Region will find excellent job opportunities, an exciting and varied cultural life, and schools that are second to none. K-W real estate is also considerably less expensive than similar homes in other nearby cities such as Toronto.
Indeed, residents and businesses in Waterloo Region have an enviable combination. They have the more friendly and pleasant atmosphere found in a smaller urban area while being ideally situated to take advantage of the amenities of larger cities such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
