Memory Foam Beds - Want To Sleep Like An Astronaut?

Memory foam came about early on in the 70's when NASA started an experimental project intended to produce a substance that could help alleviate the discomfort astronauts felt during lift-off. During the course of research, a new foam material, named visco elastic, was invented that was able to conform to a person's shape and subsequently revert to its own natural shape when pressure was removed. This foam allowed for the even distribution of body weight over the entire surface of the foam, rapidly adapting to any movements of the body. Tempur-Pedic introduced the earliest memory foam beds in 1992, amidst much fanfare.

A visco memory foam mattress isn't what you would label as a "soft" mattress. It molds and contours to your body, and the contouring effect spreads that weight over more of the sleeping surface, thereby reducing pressure points. On a common inner-spring bed, pressure points can create soreness and make you toss and turn, so visco's contouring nature will allow for a better night's sleep.

Another feature of this foam is the open cell make-up, which allows the mattress to breathe. For the most part, a memory foam bed won't retain your body heat and moisture, leaving the resting surface comfortable all night.

Visco foam is resistant to odor causing germs, mold and bacteria. Because countless people suffer with allergies, visco can assist in improving your overall health and comfort by reducing the presence of these allergens in the bedroom.

A memory foam bed also works to reduce motion transfer between you and your significant other, so if one of you moves at some point in the night, it will not wake and disturb the other. Less disturbance due to movement means a deeper, more peaceful sleep.

It's important to know that good quality memory foam beds will not need a box-spring under them for added support. While you can definitely use a platform base to increase the height of the mattress, it's important to note that the bed should feel just as good resting on an even, concrete surface.

Also, sure to take a good look at the warranties that different companies have and be wary of poor quality imitations. You can't be sure of the quality of memory foam from overseas, so be wary of foam mattresses not produced in the United States.
